  • Old Business

Hamvention: WB8PMG

Also known as Mudvention, sales were down due to the inclement weather. There were eight club participants and income was $111 from equipment sales and $24.50 from commissions. Costs were $240 in fees and approximately $20 for gas, resulting in a net loss of $124.50. Overall perceptions were positive for the indoor exhibits and flea market, but negative regarding the increased distance and the mud.

General License Classes: KA8CBE

Four classes remain. A projector has been successfully utilized. On June 17, we will hold our final class followed by an extended lunch and one-on-one review.  At 1:30 we will conduct an FCC exam for all license classes. Another exam will be held July 22.

  • New Business

Baofeng Raffle: WB8LDW KC8PAM

At the June meeting, we will begin selling chances in the Baofeng raffle and also hold a 50/50 drawing.

Field Day: KB8JOY

Field Day will be June 24 at the Miami County Fairgrounds and will be advertised on the electronic board at the Fairgrounds. This will be combined with the Spring Social and the Activity Meeting. The tentative schedule calls for setup to begin at noon and on the air at 2pm although, as with any Field Day, those times may change.  Dinner is at 5:30 and we hope to remain on the air until midnight. For the activity, KC9NVP encourages anyone wishing to construct an HF antenna to bring wire. Their antenna will be constructed, tuned, used for Field Day, and then they can take it home. KC8PAM will oversee the grill, KD8VDJ will oversee carry-ins, and WA1EIB will oversee beverages and sandwich fixings.

Motions: Allocate $125 for Field Day food. Motion: KD3SQ, Second: WB8LDW. Motion passed.

Allocate $30 for the June 17 luncheon. Motion: W8POF, Second: WB8LDW. Motion passed.

Donation: W8POF

W8POF has a Linksys broadband router that he no longer uses and he donated it to the club in support of the MeshNet project.

NIMS/ICS training: KC9NVP

KC9NVP wishes to keep accurate records in dealing with the National Incident Management System and Incident Command System. He encourages all who complete an online course with FEMA to email that fact to him so he can forward it to the state.  If we get deployed, our credentials would then be on file.

  • Public Service

Troy Strawberry Festival Bike Tour: KA8CBE KB8JOY

The Bike Tour is Sunday, June 4 and is important in that it renews our relationship with the Troy Strawberry Festival. Bike Tours are easy-going events and good for a first public service experience.

West Milton Triathlon: KB8JOY

The West Milton Triathlon is June 17 and is the club’s oldest and most important public service event. The complication this year is that it conflicts with General License class and testing which will pull away some of our participants, so we face being short-handed for this important event.

KD8YZC won the door prize.

  • Old Business

Make-It-Take-It: KA8CBE, KC9NVP

The April activity meeting was a great success with 14 in attendance, 12 of whom constructed tape measure antennas. No one wanted to stop after one hour, so everyone stayed an extra hour to complete and trim their antennas. KC9NVP oversaw the tuning of all twelve antennas.  Thanks to KD8GEH for soldering materials and WB8PMG for cables with PL-259s.

Activities Committee: KB8JOY

The Activities Committee is in need of further members. KD8GEH and WB8LDW volunteered to join KD8YZC, who will serve as chairperson, and KD3SQ. The Activities Committee is considering 6 proposals for the June activity.  Anyone else with activity proposals should inform KD8YZC.

Hamvention: WB8PMG, KB8JOY

We have spaces #7247, #7248, #7347, and #7348 as well as two vendor’s passes.

This will be the last year that WB8PMG will take charge of this event. Procedures are similar to other years. One needs to be a member or sponsored by a member to sell items.

On Wednesday, May 17, from 4pm to 6pm, members will be present at the clubhouse if anyone wishes to drop off equipment for sale. We plan on manning the flea market site from noon to 5 pm on Friday and as early as 6am until 5 pm Saturday. If no one wishes to take charge on Sunday, we will drive back to the clubhouse Saturday after the close.

Hamvention fee structure: KB8JOY, KA8CBE

In the past two Hamventions, though the club sold over $3000 each year, club income was a total of $55, resulting in an average loss of about $100 per year. Due to the increase in Hamvention costs, the club needs to take action to avoid greater losses this year. The officers recommend a fee structure of 5% for members and 10% for non-members and estates selling at Hamvention. Motion for same from K8ROG, Second: NB8D.  Discussion ensued.  Motion passed.

General License class: KA8CBE

We have completed five weeks with seven remaining.  We have 7 participants.

State of the Club: KB8JOY

State-of-the-club

1/23/2017

The positive aspects of the club to date will be easily discovered in the monthly agendas for our meetings.  Membership #’s are strong, treasury solid, public service and education activities well staffed, social activities well attended, and committees are functioning independently.  In an era where volunteer radio clubs are shrinking and even disappearing the MCARC is far from the norm.  I stand and I salute.  So instead of rehashing the past tonite’s shortest-ever Presidential address is concentrated on how I see the next year.

  1. Several years ago pop performer Michael Jackson dubbed what was to be his last musical tour “This is it”.  The 2017 “This is it” for me shall include more delegation of duties and organization- particularly in the area of public service; continued education of the club in the PA area at the fairgrounds; a sincere effort to visit other radio clubs to see what is going on outside of Miami County; and a continued effort to get more club members involved in more club activities.  That is my pledge to you.
  1. This is a good year for the club to do some more tweaks in our constitution.
  1. As our committees flourish and others begin I am calling for more written reports that can be shared with the membership. These will help our business meetings flow better and increase our inter-club communication.
  1. This is a good year to start to put this modest facility to more use. With the talent that exists in this organization I would like to see the development of activity nights that increase our knowledge, peak our interest, and grow our radio technique.  Kit building, antenna building, digital station building, orientation to the club station, etc. should not come from the officer group but from within.   Develop your idea and bring your plan to your officers so that we can help potentially facilitate more club activity.  To be blunt- we cannot do this kind of activity on meeting nights that are set aside for business.  We do not want to go back to the days of 2 ½-3hour meetings.  Been there done that no fun.
  1. We need to direct our energies to getting our building and grounds improved and up to snuff.  Antennas working properly, finish moving out of the North building before we look for 10 new things to do.

I’m looking forward to all that we’ll get to do together this year.  At any time that you have questions or thoughts please make them known to our officer group.  This concludes my 4th and final state-of-the-club address ‘cuz “This is It”…………………………..

Scott/KB8JOY

Motion to have the State-of-the-Club address printed but not read at the February meeting. Motion: KD3SQ, Second: WB8LDW. Passed.

Reports

 Station/Clubhouse: N8BCM, KD8YZC

Thanks to all. The committee is looking at an isolated circuit for the A/C and investigating adding insulation to the exterior walls of the radio room. KD8YZC posted a CAD drawing of the plan including copious use of whiteboard.

Repeaters: KB8JOY, KD8GEH

W8SWS went down before Christmas due to a faulty isolation transformer but is back up now using the Hamtronics repeater. The Spectrum repeater was removed and is on WB8PMG’s bench where a tone board will hopefully be added. KJ8Z loaned a monitor to check the repeater but there seems to be an issue. Once the Spectrum is up the two repeaters will be compared.

Old Business

Financial committee: KC9NVP

The Financial Committee has considered a number of possibilities for funding. Recommendations  included: a 10-15% fee for selling equipment from estates, equipment raffle, reward programs, raffling vehicles or guns.  Concerns were expressed and discussed regarding the raffle of guns or vehicles.

New Business

Antenna Project: KC9NVP, N8VTU, KA8CBE

KC9NVP displayed a 2 meter antenna made from a broom handle and sections of tape measure that N8VTU had seen demonstrated by Mike Martz N8XM of Sidney. Construction project for same was discussed and significant interest was shown. KC9NVP and KA8CBE will gather materials and the project will be discussed in detail at the February meeting.

Constitutional Amendments: KA8CBE

There are a number of ideas for constitutional amendments being discussed. Since these require a special notice and special procedures, KA8CBE demonstrated how to submit a proposed constitutional amendment according to the constitution.

Per the constitution, he made a motion and provided a written notice of an amendment adding the statement, “The club shall not condone, or permit to occur on its premises, discrimination based upon race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap, age, or ancestry of any person,” to the Preamble. Second: KD3SQ.

The amendment will not be considered until written notice is provided ten days in advance of the meeting at which the amendment will be discussed.

He encouraged others wishing to amend the constitution to present their ideas in a similar manner at the February meeting and special notice will be given to consider all amendments at the March meeting.
